Kunnen we elkaars pijn nog begrijpen als we niet meer met elkaar praten?
Zien we elkaar nog als mensen, als we alleen maar over elkaar praten als ‘de ander’?
Voor de expositie IN GESPREK gingen dertien duo’s met elkaar om tafel. Duo’s van wie anderen misschien niet direct denken dat ze elkaar opzoeken. Centraal in ieder gesprek is de verschrikkelijke aanslag van Hamas op 7 oktober 2023, de gruwelijke daden van Israël in Palestina in de periode daarna en de gewelddadigheden in Amsterdam in november 2024. Hoe kunnen we als Amsterdammers in verbinding blijven, juist wanneer de stad onder druk staat?
De mensen die tegenover elkaar zitten, kijken vaak anders naar de wereld. Zo is de één moslim, de ander joods. Zo heeft de één een Palestijnse achtergrond, de ander een Israëlische. Die gesprekken zijn niet altijd gemakkelijk. Maar veel vaker zijn deze mensen helemaal niet zo verschillend. Vaker herkennen ze juist elkaars pijn en verhalen.
In sommige gevallen zijn het duo’s van mensen die al langer samen optrekken, en in andere gevallen zijn het mensen die elkaar voor het eerst ontmoeten. Maar wat uit elk gesprek blijkt is: elkaar als mens blijven zien en elkaar in de ogen blijven kijken is belangrijk. Sterker nog, is van levensbelang. Wanneer we dat niet meer doen, ontstaat ontmenselijking en waar ontmenselijking ontstaat, kunnen vreselijke dingen gebeuren.

Initiatief
Dit project is een initiatief van de Amsterdamse gemeenteraad. In november 2023 nam deze een motie aan van de raadsleden Itay Garmy en Sheher Khan. De motie roept het college van burgemeester en wethouders op om de ontmenselijking tegen te gaan van Amsterdammers die te maken hebben met toegenomen antisemitisme en moslimdiscriminatie. En dit te doen door hen een gezicht te geven en hun verhaal te delen. Dat is wat IN GESPREK doet.
Makers
IN GESPREK is gemaakt door stichting Open mind, in samenwerking met de gemeente Amsterdam. Open mind maakt onderbelichte verhalen zichtbaar. Met artistieke projecten en relevante verhalen brengt ze complexe onderwerpen onder de aandacht van een groot publiek en maakt deze bespreekbaar.
De duo portretten werden gemaakt door Miriam Guttmann, Joods Amsterdamse fotograaf en documentairemaker. De gesprekken werden geleid en uitgeschreven door Salwa van der Gaag, journalist met een Palestijnse vader.

IN CONVERSATION
Can we still understand each other’s pain if we stop talking to each other?
Do we still see each other as human beings if we only talk about each other as ‘the other’?
For the exhibition IN CONVERSATION, thirteen duos talked to each other. Duos of whom others might not immediately think they seek each other out. Central to each conversation is the terrible attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023, Israel’s atrocities in Palestine in the period thereafter and the violence in Amsterdam in November 2024. How can we as Amsterdammers stay connected, especially when the city is under pressure?
People sitting opposite each other often look at the world differently. For instance, one is Muslim, the other Jewish. For instance, one has a Palestinian background, the other an Israeli one. These conversations are not always easy. But far more often, these people are not so different at all. More often, they actually recognise each other’s pain and stories.
In some cases, they are pairs of people who have been hanging out together for some time, and in other cases, they are people meeting for the first time. But what emerges from every conversation is: continuing to see each other as human beings and continuing to look each other in the eye is important. Indeed, is vital. When we stop doing that, dehumanisation occurs, and where dehumanisation occurs, terrible things can happen.

In conversation
We hope this travelling exhibition inspires and calls for conversation. We ask everyone to have respect for the people who participated in this project. Because for something that perhaps should be seen as completely normal – going INTO CONVERSATION with each other – it just takes a lot of courage. Especially in times like these.
This project in no way diminishes the terrible attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023 or Israel’s atrocities in Palestine in the period since. In no way does it justify injustice or attempt to mitigate suffering. The talks were conducted in late September, early October 2024, with additions in December 2024 to current events in our city.
The quotes in the stories are the opinions of those portrayed. The starting point of the exhibition is universal human rights. Human rights apply to everyone, regardless of origin, faith or identity. By approaching each other with respect and engaging in dialogue, we contribute to less polarisation and more mutual understanding.
Initiative
This project is an initiative of the Amsterdam City Council. In November 2023, it adopted a motion by councillors Itay Garmy and Sheher Khan. The motion calls on the municipal executive to counter the dehumanisation of Amsterdam residents who face increased anti-Semitism and Muslim discrimination. And to do this by giving them a face and sharing their stories. That is what IN GESPREK does.
Makers
IN GESPREK was made by Open mind foundation, in cooperation with the municipality of Amsterdam. Open mind makes underexposed stories visible. With artistic projects and relevant stories, it brings complex issues to the attention of a large audience and makes them discussable.
The duo portraits were made by Miriam Guttmann, Jewish Amsterdam photographer and documentary filmmaker. The interviews were led and transcribed by Salwa van der Gaag, journalist with a Palestinian father.
